From Passion to Purpose: The Unlikely Journey of Nyahallo's Story
Hey, lovely nyah-mily!
Hi, I'm Jen, the founder and creative force behind NyahalloShop. I'd like to tell you about myself and humble beginnings, which led to the founding of my business. As an artist, designer, and proud daughter of immigrants, I've woven my passions and heritage into the fabric of my business. Growing up, I never imagined I'd be my own boss. In fact, I used to think I'd end up in a 9-to-5 job, stuck in a cubicle. But life had other plans. I'm grateful for the sacrifices my parents made to give me a better life. Their resilience and determination inspire me every day to pursue my dreams and make them proud.
Growing up, art was my escape. I spent hours sketching, painting, and dreaming up fantastical worlds and characters. But, I never considered turning my passion into a career. I used to think entrepreneurship was reserved for a select group of people.
I initially pursued a traditional path, seeking stability and security. However, I found myself trapped in a cycle of unfulfilling, low-paying jobs that lacked purpose. Although I hold a degree in an unrelated field, I found myself navigating a challenging Canadian job market. The economic climate at the time made it difficult to secure meaningful employment, and I was limited to dead-end opportunities that left me feeling unfulfilled and restless. My Asian upbringing emphasized the importance of established careers like medicine, law, and engineering. Entrepreneurship was never considered a viable option, and I struggled to reconcile my creative aspirations with my family's expectations.
Additionally, as a child of immigrant parents and part of the "1.5 generation," I often felt caught between two worlds. Technically, I was a first-generation immigrant, but since I moved to Canada before the age of 2, I've always identified as fundamentally Canadian. Yet, I've frequently encountered situations where I wasn't treated as such. This limbo influenced my perception of entrepreneurship, and my family instilled in me the idea that business ownership wasn't accessible to anyone. For a long time, that influence made me doubt my ability to start a business.
The Unlikely Entrepreneur
My upbringing was rooted in resilience. I come from a working-class immigrant family, where financial struggles were a harsh reality. I remember my father working tirelessly for $9 an hour to provide for us, while my mother pursued her education. I spent my childhood in a small, dingy, cockroach infested apartment in Toronto, but despite the challenges, it's where some of my fondest memories were made. What I lacked in resources, I made up for with determination, creativity, and a thirst for knowledge. From these humble beginnings, Nyahallo's story began to take shape, growing from a small spark into a blazing passion that continues to drive me forward.
2021 marked a turning point for me. I had an epiphany and thought "why not me?" and it sparked a newfound determination. I realized that my previous employers had started their businesses without any qualifications I didn't already possess. This revelation empowered me to re-evaluate my own potential. At the time, I felt suffocated by a career that lacked purpose and fulfillment. Every day felt like Groundhog Day, monotonous and unending. But I was tired of feeling trapped and stuck. So, I made a promise to myself to find a new way. I spent countless nights researching and planning, and every dollar I saved brought me closer to freedom. Taking a leap of faith, I decided to take control of my life and Nyahallo's story began
