Whimsical Fashion Design Showcase: The Sunflower Collection

The Sunflower Collection began as a series of sketches inspired by the feeling of the hot summer sun on my shoulders, seeing oversized sunflower petals as a child, vintage storybook fashion, and the idea of clothing that feels both whimsical and comforting while still being designed with love, care, and detail.

Like many Nyahallo collections, each design begins as a sketch before being shared individually as interest checks with our community. I also wanted to start a blog series for each collection so I could share the inspiration, artwork, and design process behind every piece while letting you all comment and share which designs you’d love to see made.

For this showcase, I wanted to share the original artwork, inspiration, and details behind each piece in the collection. From layered petal silhouettes to embroidered sunflower accents, every outfit was created with a focus on storytelling, personal expression, and wearable art.

Whimsical fashion has always been about more than clothing to us. It’s a way to create pieces that feel imaginative, expressive, and emotionally meaningful while still being functional enough to wear in everyday life.

Since 2021, our collections have always started the same way: with front-facing symmetrical sketches that help visualize each design before they’re brought together into a full themed collection.

1) Sunflower Petal Dress & Shrug

The voluminous petal-shaped skirt was inspired by the large golden petals of sunflowers and their rich, vibrant yellow tones. To balance the warmth of the skirt, we paired it with complementary deep browns, rich greens, and soft oatmeal tones to create a slightly vintage, storybook-inspired feel.

This design blends whimsical fantasy and cottagecore influences, with the goal of creating something that feels as though it came directly out of a fairytale illustration. One detail not shown in the original sketch is that the shrug is intended to be removable, allowing the dress to be styled in multiple ways. Underneath, the dress features thick bodice-inspired straps designed to complement the full silhouette while still being wearable and functional.

Although each piece can stand on its own, the shrug and dress were designed to be worn together to complete the full sunflower-inspired look.

2) Sunflower Shawl & Corset Dress

This design was created to feel softer, more relaxed, and comfortable. We could easily envision this as something you could wear while wandering through the countryside, visiting a farmer’s market, or attending a renaissance faire on a warm spring afternoon. While it leans heavily into cottagecore fashion influences, we also wanted it to feel practical and easy to wear in everyday settings.

The dress features layered midi skirts, delicate ruffles, a corset-inspired bodice, and thick supportive straps designed to balance both comfort and silhouette. Along the trim of the skirt, we added a whimsical sunflower print to tie the entire collection together while giving the piece a slightly vintage storybook feel. One of our favorite details is that the dress is also designed with large hidden pockets for functionality.

The lightweight shawl was created to complement the dress without feeling too heavy or warm, making it ideal for cooler spring mornings, breezy summer evenings, or layered styling throughout transitional seasons.

We also explored two different colorways for this design because we loved both moods equally and couldn’t decide which version we preferred. Feel free to let us know which one is your favorite!

3) Sunflower Cropped Cardigan & Petal Shorts

This design was inspired by the layered shape of sunflower petals and the cozy feeling of autumn cardigans and vintage fantasy clothing. We wanted this outfit to feel playful, whimsical, and slightly adventurous, like something a character in a fairytale farming village or fantasy storybook might wear.

The cropped cardigan features puffy lantern sleeves, leaf-inspired detailing running along the sleeves, and a soft petal-shaped collar designed to resemble sunflower layers. To balance the volume of the top, we paired it with structured petal shorts inspired by overlapping sunflower petals, creating a silhouette that feels unique while still being comfortable and wearable.

One of our favorite details in this design is the contrast between the warm golden yellows and rich earthy browns, combined with soft green accents to tie the entire sunflower collection together. The outfit was designed to feel expressive and costume-inspired while still remaining practical enough for everyday whimsical fashion styling, conventions, photoshoots, or themed events.

This piece probably leans the most into fantasy-inspired fashion out of the entire collection, and we wanted it to feel bold, playful, and instantly recognizable.

4) Sunflower Cardigan

This cardigan was designed to feel warm, oversized, and comforting. We wanted the feeling of wearing this cardigan to evoke feelings like wrapping yourself in a soft blanket during late summer evenings or early autumn mornings. Out of the entire collection, this piece is probably the most casual and wearable for everyday styling while still keeping the whimsical, fantasy-inspired details that tie the collection together.

The oversized silhouette and puff sleeves were inspired by cozy vintage knitwear and storybook fashion, while the sunflower petal-inspired collar adds a softer, more playful touch. We also incorporated leaf detailing along the sleeves and pockets to make the cardigan feel more connected to nature and the overall sunflower theme.

The earthy brown tones were chosen to resemble rich soil and sunflower stems, while the muted greens and warm golden accents help bring warmth and balance to the design. We wanted the overall outfit to feel cozy, expressive, and slightly nostalgic. This is something you’d wear while reading in a cottage, visiting a small town café, or wandering through a sunflower field in autumn.

One of our favorite parts of this design is how versatile it feels compared to some of the more elaborate outfits in the collection. Even though it still carries strong whimsical fashion and wearable art influences, it was also created to be easy to style casually with skirts, dresses, or everyday outfits.

5) Sunflower Overalls

Brown sunflower embroidered overalls with puff sleeve blouse in whimsical cottagecore fashion style by Nyahallo

These sunflower overalls were designed to feel playful, practical, and easy to wear while still carrying the whimsical storybook feeling of the overall collection. We wanted them to have a slightly vintage countryside feel inspired by gardening outfits, cozy farm aesthetics, and classic overall silhouettes, while still feeling expressive and detailed.

The design features embroidered sunflower accents, leafy strap detailing, oversized rolled hems, and a relaxed silhouette meant for comfort and movement. To make the overalls feel more durable and functional for everyday wear, we plan to produce them using sturdy cotton twill or corduroy fabrics depending on the final version.

One of our favorite details is the contrast between the rich earthy browns and bright sunflower yellows, giving the piece a warm autumn-inspired palette while still keeping the playful whimsical fashion feel of the collection.

6. Sunflower Cottagecore Dress

Sunflower cottagecore dress with layered skirts, apron details, and whimsical storybook fashion elements by Nyahallo

This design is probably the most overtly cottagecore piece in the entire Sunflower Collection and was created to feel like something straight out of a fairytale or vintage storybook. We wanted this dress to capture the cozy romantic feeling of countryside fashion while still keeping the playful whimsical details that define Nyahallo designs.

The silhouette features layered skirts, soft ruffles, oversized bows, apron-inspired details, and sunflower prints throughout the hem to create a warm handmade feeling. The earthy brown bodice paired with deep greens and golden yellows was chosen to resemble sunflower fields, forest tones, and late summer afternoons. We designed it to feel expressive and detailed from every angle while still being wearable for conventions, themed outings, photoshoots, ren faires, or everyday cottagecore styling.

Like many Nyahallo designs, this piece balances fantasy-inspired fashion with functionality and comfort, combining whimsical storytelling elements with a silhouette that still feels soft, practical, and wearable.

7. Sunflower Cape

Whimsical sunflower-inspired fantasy cape with tassels and hooded cottagecore fashion design by Nyahallo

Move over Little Red Riding Hood! The Sunflower Cape is here!

This piece was designed to feel whimsical, cozy, and storybook-inspired, like something worn by a traveling florist, forest witch, or fairytale protagonist wandering through sunflower fields. We wanted it to feel dramatic and recognizable while still remaining wearable for everyday styling, conventions, ren faires, and layered autumn outfits.

The scalloped cape hem was inspired by layered sunflower petals, with warm golden yellows, rich browns, and soft cream tones chosen to resemble late summer sunsets and dried florals. The tassel trim and oversized sunflower clasp help give the design a more vintage fantasy feel while adding movement and detail from every angle.

The hood itself was designed oversized and roomy to create a softer silhouette and more cozy styling options. We imagine this piece layered over dresses, skirts, bloomers, and cottagecore outfits to create a complete whimsical fashion look.

Thank you so much for reading through our Sunflower Collection design showcase! We had a lot of fun putting this blog together and sharing the original artwork, inspiration, and thought process behind each piece.

Many Nyahallo collections begin as concept sketches and interest checks before becoming real products, so we’d love to hear what designs stand out to you the most. Would you wear any of these pieces? Which outfits would you most want us to produce and bring to life?

We also wanted to ask what you think about this style of blog post! Would you like to see more collection showcases where we break down every design, explain the inspiration behind them, and share the creative process from sketch to final concept?

For now, these designs are still concepts and interest checks, but we hope this article helped show the vibes, intention, and storytelling behind the collection, and hopefully sparked your interest and imagination too. 🌻
